I've been doing some research and it seems several audi's, bmw's, nissan's, etc. are having similar issues regarding oil consumption.

For those who got their engine replaced did you drive your cars hard during? I'm sure if you do you would be burning oil faster.

Rattling noise also

It's funny that you say this because my car does the exactly the same thing. At first I thought I did something wrong. I then proceeded to add some oil to the car and the noise stopped. When I took it to the dealer, I went off on them and told them they didn't put enough oil in the car when they charge me a freakin arm and leg to service it. They never once mentioned to me about the pistons, and the possible malfunctions.

After a little research and a call to Pat Goss (automotive guru and host of Goss’s Garage on 106.7 JFK) I found out that a percentage of our cars have problems with their piston rings. He told me that Nissan refuses to admit the problem and that I should be looking for a new engine.

At least I have only 15,000 miles and the warranty should apply. Let’s hope that Infiniti owns up to this problem and does not give me any s$#* for the MREV. There may be some of you out there with the same problem who (like me) can’t get a good reading because of that damn dipstick. Make sure you get this problem on record before your warranty period runs out.

TSB Revised

Infiniti revised their OC TSB again.

Added a new first step to flow chart, which imo falls under step 14's qualifications and if so, starts you at step 12.
Should qualify owners sooner if their previous oil service was done at a dealer.

Nope sorry. Can't help you on that one.
-edit-
On second thought, what code do you mean?

I've never experienced that noise other than I get a ticking noise and/or slight timing chain grrrr when I'm ~ quart or more low.

That sounds like what I've heard described as when there's hardly any oil left in VQ. The 'lawn mower' sound sorta. Could be valve train noise too idk.

Hate when noises disappear when going to dealers to hear.
Try to narrow it down to when that happens. (after long runs, when still cold after start-ups, etc)

Hey guys, I'm new to the site but have read all the posts. Unfortunately, I do have a similar issue with my VQ motor. It is odd because the issue only became apprant at 48,000 miles.

I was right before my next oil change when I noticed that my engine compartment was emitting more heat. Then on my way to work I saw my oil light flash after a hard start at a light. Since I was 1/4 a mile from my office parking lot I just went there and added a quart of Mobil 1 that I had in my trunk. It ate it all up and all the noises went away. The next day when i did the oil change, there was 1.5 quarts left. I can't belive that I was running on .5 quart and the only thing my oil light did was flash. (this is when you want the new V8 M3 with no dip stick.....all electronic sensors). Since that dipstick is the spawn of satan i could never get an accurate reading, but when you check it when its bone cold in the morning after having it sit is the best time to check. BUT you HAVE to be on LEVEL ground because if it tilts at all then it gets all f'd up. I had readings of 12 mm low to 2 mm low on the dipstick which doesn't really help when your trying to determine if your motor is chugging oil.

In any case, I went to one delership around me and I had a plenum and CAI on the car. They gave me the run around and generally hostile and vague so I ddin't even let them take the VIN and I left. 2 hours of un-moding and re-stock-ing I took it to another dealership. I walked in told them about how much oil was in there and they started the OC test right there. THEY mentioned that there was a TSB out on it (which I knew from here) and for me to return in 1000 miles. After the first 1000, they said I was a "hair" shy of a quart. He said he wrote it down as a "hair" OVER a quart. THough he didn't SAY the engine would be replaced, it SEEMS they are TRYING to get the engine replaced for me. Also, he mentined that my "transmission" was making noise and that they would be happy to run the tests and get the transmission replaced while they are at it since it is under warrenty too. (In reality its the flywheel "clatter" from an aftermarket clutch but I didn't pipe up and say anything about that). This took me aback because after hearing all these horror stories here on the site it made me extremely skeptical that a DEALERSHIP wants to do an engine swap AND a Tansmission swap. Can someone explain that one for me?

^ Hey...welcome to driver and sorry to hear you've joined our OC club

I've heard of some VQ's going South around your mileage. Don't know why and think they were non-revup's. Which one do your have?

Love your comment of dip stick being spawn of satan good one.

Sounds like that other dealer wants to do you right. Go with it. Read somewhere...too many OC threads...about dealers and their warranty to cash ratio bases can make them not want to do this warranty work or do. Maybe that's what happened at your first dealer. They sound arrogant and would've lost me as a customer permanently.

Tranny too? Let them check it out. They have to swap parts anyway on engine and/or tranny. Free warranty labor, parts cost to customer or bring your own new clutch parts like aftermarket. Prime opportunity.

Just got my new revup, so I'll see how that goes and will update here and there on it's status.

i should check my engine then, i just hit 49k. as for tranny @ dealer, when my car was making a "noise" i couldnt do it when i got to service.. but when they had mechanics check it out, they found out it was tranny and replaced that and the clutch. just get in good with ur service people, i kept bsing with them and what not they were like let me see if we can get u another clutch if it shows any kind of wear we will say its from the tranny being bad... wala "sir we are going to replace the tranny and clutch due to pre -mature wearing" only thing that was wrong when i got it back was the shifter they didnt put the boot in there right so it was all gay and wouldnt go into 5th smoothly but they fixedit following day.

Yeah, definitely keep us updated?

For those who had the engine knocking/grinding noise etc. and are going through the oil consumption issue can you describe the noise?

Just want to know what to look for before I purchase one.

Thanks.

couple things i noticed about my first round of oc test:

1: they overfilled it by a half a quart.

2: they do the change with 10w30 when the owners manual clearly states 5w30 is the optimal.

a little overfill, heavier oil, maybe not so much recordable consumption
