MantisG35,

There is absolutely no rational reason for downshifting to slow down the speed of your car under normal driving conditions.

Update: After less than 350 miles on the new engine, its rattling and clanking. The car goes back to the dealer on Monday for the technicians to look at it. Ill give another update when I know more...

Well, ok I feel slightly stupid now. I think part of my exhaust is rattling. I had my friend stick his head under the hood to listen for the rattle while I revved it up and he didnt hear anything but I could clearly hear it from the driver's seat. There must be an exhaust leak or something that the dealer did wrong when they put my exhaust back on. Guess my car doesnt need to go back in and Ill resume the engine break in process.

Yeah that might be the exhaust pipe when they where putting it on after the drop of your new motor but I would suggest keep an eye on it. Good luck with the new motor.

No, the tranny noise was not related with the oil issue but the dealer told me that they contacted the techline and supposedly it was normal.I was thinking it was a clutch bearing but they said its the gear box.Weird and sometimes annoying thinking that I have a 10 year old car that doesn't even do that.

Good luck on that oil consumption test hopefully you get that motor. I am barely on 300 miles on that test, men this is taking long.

Turns out that noise is the HFC hissing/rattling. Its normal apparently. There's a thread about it. I just didnt notice it prior to my new engine I guess

yeah im crazy like that. what do you mean man?! Downshifting is basics. If you try stopping the car without downshifting on a driving exam in california they will fail you.

Downshifting an MT car under normal driving conditions as a means to slow the car down went out when internal expanding-shoe drum brakes came in. In the day and age of multichannel four wheel computer controlled disc brakes with ABS/VDC/EBA/preview braking, it's positively moronic.

Brakes are quite a bit cheaper than trannies and clutches.

Back to oil.

Checked my car today. 1300 miles into the current oil change, approximately 1/3 quart down according to the stick. (04AT).

Just over 32K on the car.
