Any modern car has too much power for a 16 year old. I don't care how responsible a driver some 16 year old may be, they will make mistakes due to lack of experience and possibly a cocky attitude. I'm 19 and just bought a G35 coupe and think I'm beyond lucky to have such a car. My first car wasn't much slower, but I know I have matured since I was 16.

start with something big and heavy, my first car was a '92 marquis, not too fast, just enough to be able pass safely, easy to fix and cheap insurance... not to mention making the bulk of my peers jealous (most 16 year olds don't drive around here, and those that do usually drive the like of civics), mostly 'cause of the space and comfort, and the torque.
heck i feel like i'm too young for the g sometimes, and i'm 24.
start 'em off in something that will make them appreciate a fine car like a g more, but something still cool, no civics or tercels... have some pity on them...
oh, and a good thing about big cars: you learn to parallel park really well

I'm 17 and I'm getting the G37. I guess my parents have a lot of trust in me. My brother who has a G35 coupe doesn't have an issue with me getting such a powerful car either. 
I currently drive a Lexus GS350 which is quite powerful but still in easy handling for me. It all depends from person to person. Asians are good, responsible, and very well behaved.

Another asian friend, Dinavie, has a Lexus IS350 which is powerful for about 1 1/2 years... any issues? Nope. Friend Christina has a BMW M3 Convertible (2006 model) for about 2 years... any issues? Nope. Saying that we're not able to handle powerful cars is different from person to person. There's a difference between having the power and using it compared to having the power and just liking that it's there.
I saw an idiot who... well it's "drove" now, a Dodge Charger doing power runs around the school parking lot (it's pretty big) and showing off how fast his car is and how quick it could take turns. He lost control of it and crashed into another student's car. People like him don't deserve to have such power in their hands... but for people like my two friends, they're just casual drivers, as I am also.
