Started my car this morning and the car wouldn't accelerate. I could only drive in tiptronic and it wouldn't always recognize the gear shift, took a few tries sometimes...long story short, take my car to the dealership and was told the transmission valve control needs to be replaced to a tune of just under $1500. I have 125k miles on the car and other than this there's been no major issues. Dealer quoted me $7,500 on the trade-in value. Is it worth fixing the issue? Has anyone had to replace the part and then had more tranny issues down the line?

btw it's a 2005 G35x

$7500 on trade-in?! add to that $1500 to fix it, for a total of $9k. that's still way under the blue book value on that car, despite the mileage.

get it fixed, but not at a dealer, and sell it private party - unless you want to keep driving it, of course.

/edit KBB good-condition value is $10.5k for private party, $8.5k for trade-in. so, they're actually giving you a decent deal, it's just saddeningly low nonetheless...

Take it elsewhere to have the transmission looked at.

Is it a base model? Premium model? Nav?

7500 sound low...but that's trade-in for ya.


I was at the dealership today, and a nice 06 G35x was on the lot for sale....for $19,500.

I don't know what to do...I'm a little annoyed because I've taken such good care of it and even the dealership was surprised (I think my service guy actually genuinely felt bad for me). I thought I could get another 5 years out of it; at least I tried to maintain it to get a good life from the car.

Dealer said they'll take it (of course) and I can get into a lease G37x coupe. I was planning on leasing (an A5) anyway as I don't drive as much anymore but thought I'd have my G35 as a backup car. Just wanted to get the opinion of the experts here before making a decision.

Check the fix price at an independent shop

The car is 6 years old. Stuff breaks and no car is perfect. Expensive repairs, though rare, do happen on these cars. If it were me, I'd fix it. The chances of another major repair like this are pretty low and it's FAR cheaper in the long run. Overall, these cars are extremely reliable and easy to maintain.

It's a minor issue (compared to a spun rod bearing etc) get it fixed and your car will be like it was before.

Any car, after 100,000 miles there are always problems and issues that surface which would need to be fix. I think I would throw in the $1500 and resolve the problem.

Thanks all. I decided to take the advice and fix it. Hopefully, it doesn't crap out before my A5 comes in...went to sign a lease offer today.
