[CA] Cat replacement

"All this means is that the DMV has chosen your vehicle to be inspected at a STAR certified smog station which is monitored closely by the BAR and must conform to high standards established by the Bureau of Automotive Repairs."

Basically, make/models that have higher frequency of failing smogs tests have to go to a 'star' smog test. Not to mention, the last 'star' smog I got was $75. Normal ones are about half that
To my knowledge, with the 'star' test means they put the car on a roller/dyno to test the tail pipe emissions, while normally they just test the tailpipe emissions and check for CEL codes at idle.

I hate this place even more when I found out I can't just simply import 25 year old cars and register it... ( tbh, I want something else other than a G, but G is the next alternative)

Only cars from 1976 to 2000 go on rollers and get sniffer test.

My first Maxima had cat issues, very common on those cars, especially the early VQ35s. Mine was the 92nd one built for '02 (June '01 build date) and it used a quart every 1500-1800 miles. Would occasionally get a P0420/0430 but the biggest issue was my car wasn't running as strong as it used to. Got on the freeway behind a Grand Am GT (185 hp IIRC) and I barely got around it. Found some used cats, swapped them in and timed 45-85 run showed a full three second improvement. You could see the original cats had some clogged up cells. So it isn't just not passing smog, bad cats can hurt performance too.
