Studio on Wheels - Sound Impressions
My dislike of the Bose sound system in my '07 Sedan is for several reasons:
1) The bass is terrible. I hear about the claim of sub-woofers but with the bass turned all the way on, it's still not that great. I owned a Toyota Avalon with a dedicated sub-woofer on the back desk and it worked great. I would like to see the system have reasonable bass at the mid point and then, if someone wanted to get some thumping bass, they could turn it to the max.
Does anyone know if the speaker on the back deck is a sub-woofer? I'm thinking of going to the local stereo place and seeing if I could somehow add a crossover and an amplifier and power the rear deck speaker to make it a real sub-woofer. Or even replace the speaker with one that can push some bass.
Has anyone done any modifications to push the bass in their 2007 G35s?
2) The owners manual says it plays MP3s. I was very disappointed to find that although the head unit will indeed play mp3 discs, the 6 disc changer in the trunk won't play mp3 discs. Why didn't they disclose this in the sales material?
3) You can copy your audio CDs to the hard drive.... of course that's unless you are playing an mp3 disc. This makes no sense. You should have been able to simply transfer the mp3 songs to the hard drive compressed as-is. Requiring a "regular" disc to copy to the hard drive is a pain. To transfer my music library, I had to create over 40 cds and then have the head unit compress and move them to the hard drive. That's both a pain and very inefficient. PLUS, it make all of them separate ALBUMS on the hard drive which makes selecting your favorite songs harder.
4) No ability to create playlists on the hard drive. Not the end of the world but it would have been nice.
5) The ability to play from CF card is great! It would have been nice to be able to copy these songs to the hard drive as well.
Oh well.... if I can figure out a way to get some decent bass, all will be okay. The car is outstanding to drive and I expect I will be in it for MANY, MANY miles so I want everything perfect :-)

The SOW has definitely grown on me. I have a custom HU and audio setup on my other ride, and I guess I've gotten "spoiled" by the sound. However, all complaints aside, the SOW still produces solid sound. Could Infiniti have done a better job with the overall audio package...sure, but after its all said and done, I'm just happy as s**t that this car is so freakin fun to drive! nuff said...

That has been my biggest (and maybe only) disappointment with this car. I've only had my car a week but it was evident from mile one that the SOW is miserable. I had a 98 Dodge Avenger with an Infinity system before this. As crazy as this sounds, the Infinity system in a Dodge was WAY better than the SOW. Not even close. I'm getting a Basslink installed tomorrow so that should provide a little more punch to the SOW, but I don't think it will be as good as I'd like it unless I gut it and start from scratch.
It would've been cool if the speakers were by Infinity.
Infinity system in an Infiniti.
I am content with SOW but maybe I'll get Basslink to see how much "boom" it has since I listen to a quite a bit of rap... I'm not sure how much it would help but I'm sure I won't be disappointing.

That would have been cool and it probably would have sounded a helluvalot better.
From what I've read around here, the Basslink just provides some extra bump. Most say it's a little extra bottom-end to give the music some feeling. Check around - if you want BASS, you might want to invest a little more and get bigger components. You can PM me after the weekend if you want my impressions of the Basslink.

SOW is a significant improvement over my 04 Sedan's BOSE; a SIGNIFICANT improvement. I'm talking about just in audio quality too; if you factor in the technology it's not even worth mentioning together.
I'm a huge audiophile and find the SOW's horrible. You absolutely must turn the bass up all the way to even catch a glimpse of it. Highs are dull and muted as well. I'm really disappointed. I traded in my 07 Camry after just 6 months and can tell you the Camry's JBL system was much better in comparison. The JBL system still stunk, but as far as OEM goes it wasn't bad. Has anyone even verified that the speakers are in fact Bose. On my 2k2 Maxima they were Clarion with exception of the amp and Bass module. Doesn't really matter. Bose is known for their inferior sound quality and outragious prices. "No highs, no lows, it must be Bose". Ever wonder why they call them "Bass Modules" instead of subs? They try to cover too much frequency with them and their is a huge lull in the 200-400hz range. Not to mention they don't go down very low. Sorry for the rants, I just hate how Bose has this reputation for those who don't know as being the best, when they use extremely cheap material and have horrible sound quality. But of course one would never know because Bose won't allow their speakers to be demoed against any other speakers. Next time you go into BB or another audio dept. look at how far away they keep the Bose setup from the other speakers.

? Having said that I do think the SOW lacks some punch if that's the right word. I seem to think the amps don't have enough instantaneous power to drive the speakers. I'm not a fan of Bose especially their HT systems, but I am completely satisfied with the SOW as an OE system.
