Wow, doesn't that sound really muffled?

Not really actually. I don't have a preferred genre of music (I like everything from Classical to Red Hot Chili Peppers to 50 Cent), but rap/hip-hop sounds amazing with these settings, especially the song "Top Back" by T.I.

However, if I were to listen to Classical, I usually put the Treb. and Bass all the way up.

At first I messed with the treble/bass but after a while I just left everything treble/bass/fader at the center and really like how it sounds.

There was a time where I was going to upgrade the speakers but then decided I'd save the money for a home theater instead, since the SOW sounded good enough to me and I didn't feel like ripping things apart.

I have bass and treble both 1 down from max. works perfect for most music - even turned almost all the way up.

been listening to everything from Duke Ellington to Rush, Nine inch Nails, etc.... and so far it all sounds awesome - all very clear - and I do hear new details - even in music I have had for 20 years.....

the system could use a bit more at the extreme low end - but other than that I am really enjoying it!

Audio
I like the audio system. It produces really clean and clear sound all the way to max volume. I agree it could use a litte more bass. But if you turn it up its nice. I really like the drivers stage setting.

+1 i totally agree. I heard a lot of people complaining about the SOW system. I think its great. How loud can you listen to music, really? Plus it really isn't that cool to drive around with your windows down and your music blasted all the way up...girls and other people don't find that to be attractive or cool or whatever some of you people may think.

My Opinion & looking for tech advice
I have to start by venting. Infiniti gloats so much about the quality of their new sound system in the 2007 G35 sedan. They've used a 24 bit DAC and claim that the stereo is so perfect that you can hear the difference between mp3s and regular wavs. They brag about the convenience of the built-in hard drive (which I absolutely love). But then they go and bypass all those special aspects by not allowing the HDD to rip CDs at greater than 132 bps. To top it off, they don't let you copy mp3s directly from any other source onto the HDD. They require you to convert all your mp3 to wav so that you can rip them back to mp3s again in the car. All the extra time I've wasted and all the friggin CDs I've gone through just to satisfy this process has been quite frustrating. I understand Infiniti is likely trying to protect itself from copyright infringement laws but with the wide availability of legal purchase of mp3s these days, there's no reason for them to require such a wasteful process. Okay, now that I have that off my chest, I can discuss my feelings about the stereo.

I've put about 14000 miles on the car and have allowed myself time to get used to the premium stereo. I have to say that this is definitely the best OEM stereo I have ever heard, but that's not really saying a whole lot. I would describe myself as barely satisfied with the quality of the stereo. It's not what I hoped it would be. After all the hype Infiniti gives it, it just doesn't live up to what it should.

There a few simple cheap things they could have done to make a significant difference. A 2 pt EQ is just ridiculous for a stereo that calls itself high end. This stereo is pretty typical of Bose, which is what my problem is. Bose likes to decide what they consider good sound and just try to tell everyone else that that's the way it is. A 7 point EQ would make a HUGE difference. Cheap aftermarket stereos have them, Bose has no excuse for not having one. Bose likes to take options away from the consumer and that's what I really dislike about their stereos.

I'm not a huge bass lover like some others, I just want the music to sound like what the artists intended it to sound like (and I don't listen to rap). The bass frequencies are there, they're just not well supported. They don't resonate the way they're supposed to. Infiniti brags about it's 3 subs, but they're all paper subs crammed into a small area. They desparately need to put at least one of them in a ported box. It would make a HUGE difference in the quality of the bass frequencies.

I think that most people would find this stereo satisfactory but I really like listening to music and one of my favorite hobbies to drive really fast with the windows down and the music up. The stereo supports the volume just fine without distortion but the sound balance seems to get worse when the volume goes up. The higher mids seem to rule the rest. It's a bit obnoxious. It's a good stereo, but for a car in this class which doesn't really provide the ability of replacing with aftermarket products, Infiniti should have provided the option of a really high quality stereo.

And just a quick response to anyone who would skip this car because of the stereo: I bought this car knowing that I wouldn't be quite happy with the stereo because this is the funnest car I have ever driven. There was just nothing else that compared to the sportiness of the car (6MT) and to have all the comfort and convenience factors thrown in, it was a no-brainer. I love the car and have learned to live with the stereo.

Now on to the reason I'm posting this: I was sitting here at my computer listening to music and decided that I just can't have a car stereo that doesn't live up to my $150 computer speakers. So I'm trying to figure out how to improve my stereo without making huge adjustments. A new headunit isn't an option. I'm thinking of simply building a box around the sub in the back. And I'm wondering if anyone can help me figure out what volume to make the box and whether or not to use a port.

At least it was in an indepth post to bring back on from the dead! Quite a first post jagguar...welcome to the boards...

As for your question, run a few searches on upgrading. Quite a few have done it, but I think the most common upgrade has been just adding a sub(such as Infinity Basslink). I haven't seen many more upgrades on the HU or other speakers though. Maybe others will be able to chime in.

If i were to convert my MP3s to WAV files and put them on the CF card can they inturn be transferred (ripped to mp3) to the hard drive?

Nope. The only place you can rip CDs from is the in dash CD player. Not from the CF card (why CF?! No one uses CF! How about SD or a flash drive port?), not from an iPod, not even from the CD changer. And you can't play mp3s on the changer either! What a complete waste of space! You can fit more mp3s in a single disc than you can fit wavs in the 6 disc changer!

Sorry, do I sound bitter? I'm an engineer. I expect things to be intelligently designed, especially when the manufacturer brags unrelentlessly about how well their product is designed.
