2009 G37x Slipping 4th to 5th gear??

Hello I have a 2009 G37x with 66k miles on it and seems to slip 3rd to 4th on automatic. But when i shift it myself using DS mode it seems to be normal during 3rd to 4th, except even in manual it seems to blip, flare or slip from 4th to 5th. I still have no clue. Any ideas?

I'd start by checking the tranny fluid level.

I would definitely start by just checking the fluid level.

Edit, crap just realized you have the 7AT, no dipstick.

Might be worth a Nissan drain/fill just to verify it's actually not just low fluid level.

And what dealership quoted you $13k for a tranny swap, post the quote they gave you because that's f'n ridiculous.

Holy cow that's insane, I'd demand a breakdown of the cost on that tranny swap to find out what exactly you're paying for.

Here is the part, this is the Infiniti cost for the part.

https://www.infinitipartsonline.com/...bC12Ni1nYXM%3D

So the tranny costs you $8300 for just the part, that means the dealership is charging an extra $4800 for the install. Infiniti dealership shop rates are typically a little under $150/hr, which means they're trying to charge you 32 hours of labor for a tranny swap that MAYBE takes 10 hours... or they're trying to charge you $480/hr for labor...

Also, you might not be aware that the fluid change on your transmission requires a fluid pump, it's not as simple a drain/fill like the older 5 speed Jatco tranny. It's not really any more difficult than the previous gen transmission but you have to remove the purge/overflow valve from the transmission up top and stick a hose into that hole to put fluid back in the transmission. The RE7R01A does not have a dipstick to refill the fluid like the older model RE5R01A did. I'm not completely sure of the capacity of the pan but I imagine it's still 3.5 quarts.

You could buy a brand new 2021 Nissan Altima or Nissan Kicks for just the cost of the repair on that estimate!

The service estimate is higher than the value of that car!

I think it's the same transmission used all the way up to like 2018-2019?? I know Nissan/Infiniti has been really excellent about keeping the same component across a LOT of different vehicles over the years so you could probably donor a transmission from a 370Z, FX37, or the Q cars. You would probably want to keep your existing TCM and just plug it to the donor car valve body. Might have been some kind of revision though that prevented the later ones from being used.

Don't quote me on that info, it's just a guess, you should definitely do a bunch of research and also make a thread over on MYG37.COM because that website is dedicated to that platform. Here on G35DRIVER we really don't deal with the RE7 transmission it's almost exclusively the RE5 tranny for us.

Going off a parts interchange chart is probably only going to tell you that a 2009 exact replacement will work because those are factoring in the existing valve body and TCM (mounted inside the transmission) but it you swap the TCM to another VB it typically opens up a very wide range of interchangeable parts.

You could also call one of the transmission builders for the RE7 like Level10 and just ask them, I'm sure they would know the answer without actually having to look anything up.
