Ummm, a y-pipe that is identical to the one laying on the friggen ground!! The pipe that's currently installed on my car appears to be an HR pipe. It's identical to the one on the right in Dave's picture on the first page and looks the same as the one I paid for, just older.

Any idea what gives? I find it very, very unlikely that the previous owner of the car swapped this out, but how else is this possible? I mean it isn't. And although this is the only way I've known the car, it certainly doesn't seem to exhibit any of the characteristics (sound wise) that people seem to report.

And I'd post pics if I could, but it's dark out and I only have my iPhone.

LOL no F'in way.

Post a picture of the Y-Pipe you "were" going to install... I might be able to host it if I can open the file. Send me a PM asking for my e-mail address.

Yeah, talk about a let down. I mean, I guess I should be excited that I have one. I'm just super confused as to how it got there. I'll probably swap the new one in when I get my midpipe and sell the old one. Unfortunately no matter what I do I'm going to lose out on the $25 I paid to ship it from FL.

I still don't get it though. The sound thing anyways. I mean my car is pretty quiet with the HKS as far as I'm concerned, and was definitely a whole lot quieter stock. Could my 03/04 midpipe kill all potential sound from the y-pipe?

Not sure if you were talking to me, but here's a pic of the y-pipe I just bought, aka NOT the one that has been on my car.

Umass I gotta see this. Do you have a pic of the y pipe under your car? If you're 100% correct, there are plenty of folks willing to take your spare HR Y pipe off your hands for whatever price you declare. Nothing to worry about

I will do my best to snap a quick pic after work tomorrow. But I need to borrow my buddy's floor jack. Maybe a pic from the side without the car lifted too much will show enough, we'll see.

That one looks slightly different than my HR pipe. The shape of your Y is slightly different, the y-pipe junction is different, and the flex sections are a 3rd as long. Nissan is doing some REALLY screwy stuff if the X comes with this style Y-pipe. You'd think we were dealing with a German manufacturer

Weird my 06 coupe has the old style and the one I got off a g37 is the newer style

That's a picture of the one that I purchased. It's off of a g37 coupe, which explains the difference in appearance. I measured the length of the single outlet pipe on the g37 pipe and one on my car and they seemed to be identical. Granted I just marked it off on a wrench, but they both looked to be about 10 inches or so from where the pipes meet (the casing anyways) and the outlet

update: my hr y pipe came with out the vibration dampeners and i noticed yesterday, when i was cruisin thru my apt complex in 3rd, whenever i would accelerate,i could hear a noticable rattle from underneath. so i think either i will take off the heat shields or get the vibration dampeners.

This looks VERY similar to the Y Pipe I've got. pic coming soon.

Now that you mention it, the Y Pipe DID come off of an "X" model 05...

I do notice that the X comes with these y-pipes that are similar in looks but yet different from the 07+ 350z ypipe in dimensions.

One explanation for having such a long section before the convergence is to give clearance for the extra transfer case. You should see the same design in the Stillen Gen 2, which was designed to clear both RWD and AWD models

My 04 X (VIN indicates a Feb. 04 Warr. date), came with the original Y pipe.. ( I'm second owner at 30K, previously a lease car)... actually more of a "T" pipe than anything.. the one that's shown on the left in Dave B's original photo w-a-y back at the beginning of this post! It had very short runners (mostly flex joint) hard 90 degree bends and a long collector pipe to the resonator.. DEFINITELY NOT any semblance to a Y-pipe!!

So I don't buy that 04 X's came with Y-pipes... unless there was a late 04 model change... but none of the OEM parts vendors show Y-pipes in their catalogs for an 04 G35x Sedan...?
