Re: OCT-1 ... Open Track event (Buttonwillow)
Darren,
I'm not sure Full Race compound is the best idea for non-brembo brakes. It's too easy to past the safe limit of your stock non-brembos without realizing it. Plus they tend to cost more.

A good recommendation is to run Hawk HP+ front and HPS rear. This is the same combination I have been using. Depending on how much and how hard you end up working the brakes ... this setup will eventually fade and that is a good thing. The HP+ compound fades at approx. 800 - 850 degrees, indicating to the driver it's time to back off. With Full R-compound, it's easy to go over 1000 degree and some won't fade till 1600 degrees!

Bottom of the line, pads that are rated higher than the Hawk HP+/HPS combo can certainly work and probably work better ... but, better safe than sorry. Try to stick w. compounds that do not exceed 850 degrees and you should be ok.

Since I will have my Stoptech by then, I'll bring my old Hawk pads as backups in case anyone chewed through theirs.

BTW ... you can order the HAWKS from TireRack for a very good price.

Edit: Brembo equiped people ... you guys should have no problem choosing whatever compound you want.

Re: OCT-1 ... Open Track event (Buttonwillow)
Darren, I agree with Clint on the pads issue.
I will be running Axxis Ultimate pads on my StopTechs, which are a "high performance street" type pad. Race pads are really not a good idea for us at this level of experience and equipment, and they usually turn out to be noxious and noisy for the road, and also not as safe, as to perform properly they need to heat up first, and that is not likely to happen on the street...so in a typical daily driver sudden hard application you would do worse with the race compound.

Clint:
Holy Cow! Running #14 Clockwise without the Bus Stop!
Gadzooks....we are gonna be going fast fast fast. Coming out of the Grapevine properly to get the best acceleration out of that turn, busting up the sudden rise and then whoosh through the dogleg and into Riveside turn.....my juices are starting to pump just thinking about it. Much easier on driving skills and suspensions without the BusStop, so for the newbies, this will be much easier on the car, and the nerves with the set up. The boys at Speedventures have picked it ideally for our group I would say.

This layout will still have plenty of challenges and thinking before race day even for advanced drivers, but it will be gobs of fun compared to running #13 CCW, which is such a handful.

Offramp becomes an increasing radius turn that will be friendly to power on exit, Cotton Corners will be a pain in the butt no matter what direction...so just go slow into it boys and girls and you will not regret it, and Lost Hill will be something to be careful about in the briefing room, because it will be very easy to enter too quickly and with the lift off the crest of the hill couple with the turn, adhesion will not be there and we will lose the lads with more ***** than brains directly off the road to the left side...backwards. The most difficult turn on the course will be Sunset because we will be coming at it so fast and braking will be so hard, so we need to be sure people have picked out a braking point or cone or something because they will be well over 110mph before going to the middle pedal, and their experience with car stability and distance to slow will be low. Better to get a few laps down and a feel for what is happening before going into that one hard like a hero.

This is just a great track layout for fun, and for learning, and safety, and won't chew up the gear. Great job Clint!

RainMeister,
Glad to see you interested as well ... it'll be great fun.

Have you registered and paid for it already? ... if so, I need to forward your name to Speedventures, so you can enjoy the same discount this group's getting.

Cheers,

Clint (THX723)

Re: OCT-1 ... Open Track event (Buttonwillow)
Clint/Ed,

Thanks for the recommendations and insight. I didn't even think about it like that in the terms that full race compounds might let me, bascially a newbie, get more heroic than I really should. I completely agree that the Hawk HP+/HPS combo should suffice above and beyond for my skill level. In fact, after reading the replies I have placed my order for the Hawks. For $128 I got front and rear. I called Porterfield to ask how much the R4 pads were and they were $159 just for the front pair! Talk about expensive but I know they are well worth it for race days and as you pointed out for people with more advanced driver skill. Thanks again. And for what it's worth I will only be using these new pads for race days and will change them back out when I get home. Hard thing is I got to find a good, safe place to peform proper bedding procedures.

Clint: Yes, if you could please pass my name on to Speedventures as I've already paid. I've previously driven with them (was with Ed @ Sears Point in the Spring), and was already registered. Thanks.

With your superior driving skills, Iori, just like always. I fully expect that you will heel and toe double downshift into Cotton Corners smoother than an Olympic skater on ice, while I will be lurching and hopping in a total mess of spasmodic uncoordinated frenzy...just before I go OTE. We have a month to go here, it is too early to start campaigning for sympathy support just because I have a few measly more ponies under the hood in a desperate effort to compensate for my lack of driving ability.
Then again, this could be a prelude to a friendly wager.
