Re: OCT-1 ... Open Track event (Buttonwillow)

no worries, i DO have stick envy. I have this disease they call sitting in traffic on the 405...so I figured I would buy the first automatic I have ever owned (this is my 8th car).

never again. never, never, never...not until my left leg stops working.

that doesn't stop me from driving my AT like it was a stick...or at least as close as I can get! No dbl. downshiting with the heal toe insanity for me. But hey, if I pull the spring out I can pump the e-brake with my foot for drifting!

I'm being informed by friends and teammates that I'm going to need a lot of plumbers tape. Any advice on running the track with a body kit on my car????

Hey Dude.
For tape just go to OSH or any place that carries the masking tape in 2 inch wide rolls (one inch and you will be taping all darn day!) to run over your light lenses to protect against scratches from bits of rubber or pebbles kicking up and whacking them. Not likely they would crack or shatter, just little nicks that will bother you when you polish. DO NOT use a strong adhesive tape, like duct tape..lol.

As for the body kit, shouldn't matter as long as it is on there tight and you have no peripherals that are snapped in place and might come off...like a faux vent or screen by the wheel wells etc. That kind of stuff can shake off under the torsion and speed/air pressures, and it will really **** off the guy behind you when it flies in front of him and he grinds over it at 90mph...not to mention there will not be anything left of your piece. So just be sure everything is secure, and if not, take it off.

The track is smooth, so if you can get it to the track, you do not have to be afraid of being too low.

I have not checked out your kit, but some of them look gangbusters, but are not aerodynamically optimal, so you will have to feel your way on that one. The first few laps will be with an instructor, so you will know. If your car is NA you probably won't be getting to speeds much above 110mph so the downforce issues, though present, will not be extreme, and you will be going straight line for the most part. There will be several pretty quick spots at speed however where it will matter. Look at the map of the track. At the top you will see the dog leg, and you will be taking that pretty fast, 80+ would be my guess. Then the Riverside turn, and that will be even faster. Then there is the kink after Riverside coming back down towards Lost Hill, close to 100+, and finally the kink after Lost Hill as you approach the 180 degree bend back up to the esses. The esses are at the start of the straight, so even pedal to the floor you won't be going fast enough to have an air flow induced stability problem...but coming out of them there is a kink and you may be going over 100mph again when you get to that one...and accelerating towards the final turn ninety degrees left and the main straight in front of the pits.

Bottom line. Clean EVERYTHING out of the car, glove box, trunk, etc. and then decide what you want to have with you. Put it in a couple of cardboard boxes, organized so you can find it. That way, when you get to the track, you just lift it out at your paddock station and you are ready to go. Bring a folding chair, cooler with some water/gatorade etc. I like to have three boxes. One is personal stuff for me(baseball hat, toss in the phone, car manual and registration, extra shirt (you will sweat up the one you wear driving) etc, one is supplies for the car (brake fluid, extra oil, pads, belts, rags, paper towels, tape, hand wipes, cleaner etc etc) and the other is tools and equipment goodies (like tire pressure gauge, pyrometer, brake bleeder kit etc). Do it any way that suits your style. I also have one with driver stuff, like gloves, helmet, shoes, balaclava, firesuit, and still another with camera and video gear. It feels almost like going camping.
But in less than one minute everything is out of the trunk and ready to go.

I'm not ready to track my car yet.
What are the chances of my getting in just to watch and take a few pictures?

Your chances are GREAT! In fact, you can roll with me if you want...I mean follow up. I live in Carson (not too far from Redondo). Let me know...PM me. It's free to watch and if you go, I (or others) can give you a ride along...

If any of you coming to the track without the intention to run your own car, but just to check out the scene, are inclined to want to take a ride with someone, it is possible. You will have to sign a waiver form, but it won't cost anything. You just will need to get permission, and to go with an advanced or intermediate driver. You will need to have a helmet, and long sleeved cotton shirt (no flammable synthetics), and closed toe shoes (no sandals etc), and long pants. The coverage is for protection of course. Plenty of drivers are more than happy to let you experience what it is like to drive around a race course, and if you are undecided yourself, it is a fine way to get an accurate idea of what it is like, sans the steering and pedal work.

Clint is providing me with one, but everyone going, whether they are driving or passenger'ing, must have a helmet that meets at least motocycle requirements...right Clint?

I'm not aware of Speedventures renting helmets. I could be wrong, however. But to be safe, if you're going to rent ... better rent locally.

ImagineG,
Me no see you in the pay list yet ... no helmie for ju! ... not yet at least!
