Go with a VQ replacement and maybe consider doing a built block and otherwise reengineered or upgraded version of the stock VQ motor.
If you start swapping in completely different motors, the price will go up fast.
What exactly happened to your stock motor? Some aftermarket motor builders have a core charge if you buy from them and if you send them your old motor (assuming the block is still useable) the overall price might be slightly cheaper. Shipping can play a serious factor in this though.

That was kinda why I asked exactly what happened to the original motor. If it was a catastrophic failure in the bottom end resulting in a cracked (or otherwise punctured) block, warped head, bent valves, etc., chances are he'd need a long block replacement and most of the original motor is no younger useable as a foundation for repair/rebuild. Also... if his motor has a ton of miles or abuse on it, chances are that other parts in the motor are also on their last legs and he'd be better off starting with a fresh or lower mileage replacement motor.

Engine packages are customizable to match your goals. Here are two samples of common configurations:
Stage 1 Short Block packages start at $2765 and include CP Pistons, Eagle Rods, ACL Bearings, machining, align hone, balance, blueprint and pro assembly!

It's common for our cars to leak from the valve covers.... so make sure that it's not leaking down to the lower parts of the motor from there.
How many miles on your car? Have the spark plugs ever been changed? I missfire/no-fire on one specific cylinder is typically pretty straightforward to troubleshoot.
If you haven't thrown a rod, spun a bearing, cracked the block or warped things as a result of overheating and your car doesn't experience major blowby and don't have oil consumption issues, you probably don't need a new motor.

Hondas are use-and-throw, if you're lucky it will last you 2 years.. our cars are use-and-keep-using cause they are proper cars.. so don't compare the two please.

Well our cars aint hondas.. if you blow a motor on a honda, the cost to replace it surpasses the value of the car which is about 2K so thats why you junk it and buy another Car... but G35's go for 12-15K or so and if you replace the motor for 2-3K, its still worth to swap a new motor and keep using the car

We've got a '96 Accord EXL with 176,000 miles on it. When my '04 G35 ate a valve with only 105,000 miles on it the night before I had to drive it 900 miles for a vacation, we loaded up the Honda and flew 85 MPH all the way there and back. Excellent cars with nearly "bulletproof" engines - wish my "G" was as reliable.
