Originally it was anything worse than 1qt/1000mi. got replaced.
Don't know if its different now, but have read some ppl getting replacements above that threashold.
Yours sounds like it used 2.5-3 qts/3K, right on the borderline of 1qt/1000mi.
My worsed was 1qt/1200 new, now 1qt/2500 with 22K on the clock.
You may want to get a consumption test going with your Dealer.
I'm going to when my next service due. 1qt/2500mi in my book is still unacceptable regardless of their 1qt/1000mi threashold.

I'm burning 5qt/2500mi. What are the technical steps of the oil consumption test?

You have no way of knowing now if the car was topped up when you got and therefore whether it is actually using oil or not. (If it used that much in 700kms that's a major problem.) I would however make your dealer service dept. aware it is down, have them confirm this along with your mileage since the sold date. At least they will have a record of this if you ever need to take action. Now begin a consumption test and document clearly what's happening.

From what I've read here, haven't done test yet but going to, you go to Dealer and report the consumption and would like them to start a consumption test.
Show them your records of usage and/or tell them to measure how much oil left in engine while doing a service.

-side note- my dealer knows of my consumption since new. Told them everytime I went in for service and they put it in their system. They told me originally, its b/c of my driving habits and it will improve over time (high vaccuum pull above 3000rpm), which it has somewhat, but the driving habit excuse is BS in my book and shouldn't matter. I've patiently played their game and now it's time to do something about it. Mine hasn't improved beyond 1qt/2500mi. for awhile.

They might seal your dipstick and drain plug for testing, from what I've read here. They'll tell you to come back in 500 or 1000 miles, depending on how bad of usage you tell them or they see after draining. Then they monitor/record/add oil during the testing. They usually have you come back three times = one complete consumption test from what I've read. Have read that some ppl have gone through three complete tests with Dealer before Dealer says yup...you get a new VQ.

Sorry for the length, but hope that expains things for you.

Thanks that helps. I've been doing my own oil changes for the past 15K miles but they had done one or two before that. I bought the car used with 17K already on it so have no records of that...

In any event, does anyone know if they check anything else inside the engine or do they just measure the oil level?

I'm almost through the 1000 mi they told me to put on it to take back... while its not the end of the world, its a bitch I cant drive 3kmi without worrying my oil levels are getting too low...

My sti has a decent amount of turbo blow by oil consumption but were talking like half a quart every 3kmi which is way way better...

Just would expect a little better response from nissan seeing as its a $36,000-$40,000 (if you got ripped) car

So each time you drive 1000 miles and take it back? So the test is 3000 miles?

oil problem...

Nissan/Infiniti won't even recognize the problem. I called and they REFUSED. Found 1 guy at a dealer that at least admitted he knew about the problem. So ridiculous. Nissan/Infiniti has done a 180 the last few years. Terrible customer service.

I've tried to go through alot of this thread, but it is just too long to catch everything. I'm looking at getting an '04-'06 6MT, but this oil consumption problem has caught me off guard and scared me a bit. Does anyone have any guesstimates of how common this issue is? Is it bad enough that maybe this is not a good car to be buying?

I have an 05 6MT, with 15K miles, just completed oil consumption test, 1.5 quarts/1000 miles. Dealer said Infiniti told them to top it off and there is a bulletin coming out, but *I* should call them...
The car is a lease, it's my 3rd G35 and I would say it's foolish to purchase a G35 unless you can get proof of oil burning record and pay accordingly. Same goes for the G37, Better to lease one., since Infiniti is being so deceitful about this widespread problem (this is most surprising that they are risking a lot of business and reputation on this)

^^^They been talking about a bulletin or more so a TSB for over a year
Lastest reports here and over on 350Z have been 'hand built' VQ replacements with no more consumption issues.
That consumption definitely qualifies you for a replacement, but being its a lease
It's technically not your G with a lease so maybe thats why they topped you off and sent you on your way.
Dealer yanking your chain with the bulletin BS. Nissan/Infiniti is well aware of this issue.
