The former. 1/2 quart has been consumed. If there was only 1/2 quart left, likely 1/2 a quart of pistons would have been consumed.

Wow. This thread is unbelievable and I wish I would have found it sooner. I am now convinced that I have this oil consumption problem and I am going to need a new engine. I haven't even had my first oil change (scheduled for next Tuesday) and I am about to put my second quart of oil in the G before I leave work. Started getting those horrible noises also about 1000 miles ago and had no clue exactly where they were coming from. Someone suggested I check my oil and it was definitely low!! I couldn't believe it!! A brand new fvckin car!! Well, as of yesterday, the noise is coming back so I bought another quart of oil on my way to work and will check the oil as soon as I am off. That way the car will have sat all day and I can tell exactly how much oil is left. I know it is low again but I just don't know how low. Believe me, Infiniti is gonna get an earful about this. It better get fixed. That's all I can say.

I'm going thur that now my self i can only drive the car 1000 miles and then i have to take it back to the dealer to get an oil change after the third reading if it's still bad they did promise a new engine swap. So yes keep on top of your oil reading and oil changes...

When did you buy your G? What month was it made? At what mileage did you start to hear the noises and knew something was wrong?

I have a 6/06 G same color and seems to be fine for me. Checking oil every 200 miles though as this thread has scared me!

How have you been driving it? (hard, soft, moderately, how many times did you go over 4K RPM during break in) Seems to be a debate on if how you drive it in the break in period.

I puchased my vehicle 07/29/2006 tjlazer. I'm not really sure what month it was made. I started hearing these weird noises at about 2250-2500 miles. At first I thought it was my clutch and/or tranny. I checked the ground where I park for an oil leak. No leak. So when it was suggested that I check the oil, I couldn't imagine that it would be as low as it was. I can't tell you how shocked I was. I broke the car in gently, like is recommended by most people. I never took it over 3000rpm for the first 1000 miles. After that, I did punch it a few times but living in L.A., most of my time is spent in bumper to bumper traffic. I don't get many opportunities to really open it up. I hope I'm wrong but I'm pretty sure that this is the problem.

Hexxy.....
Get your Dealer involved and informed. Have them check it, them top it off and start a 1000mi. oil check with them. That way it's documented in their (Infiniti/Nissan's) system of your oil consumption.
Nissan says 1qt/1000mi is acceptable .
When you start using more than a quart/1000mi......new engine under warranty will be honored.

My Dealer said hard driving can affect the oil consumption .
I only drive mine hard once in a while, and not everyday like I stole it...lol.

Starting with this oil change, I will definitely have them monitoring it. And believe me, it will be documented. I'll take it in there every week if I have too. I can't believe that this is happening with a brand new 06 G. My 05 red G never had this problem.

Ive got this problem too. I just had an oil change from the dealer 360 miles ago and my oil is already low. They told me to bring it back in 1500 so they can assess the situation. Ill be taking it back in probably next week when Im at around 500 miles because by then, Ill be getting dangerously low

Edit: Ive got roughly 10500 miles on my car since I bought it last December. Ive had this problem for roughly half of those 10K miles. Ive just been adding oil but last time I added oil, I had to add 2.5 quarts after only 2200 miles. That sold me

1qt every 1000miles is "acceptable"? Not in my book. We paid $40,000 for a car that cant hold its own oil. This is 2006, not 1960 or 1970.

And.. "hard driving can affect the oil consumption"? What? Were not supposed to drive the cars as hard as they were intended to be driven?
Thats like the salesman saying to you: "This car goes 0-60 in 5.5seconds, but you shouldnt try it more than once a week"

Unacceptable. I dont care what Nissan says is acceptable, I paid the money, Ill say whether or not its acceptable

^^^LOL...I feel your anger and frustration too and find 1qt/1000mi unacceptable too in this day and age.
I basically have said the same thing as you earlier in this post.
I at one point thought it was just the rev-up VQ's with this problem (298hp's), but someone chimed in who has an AT (280hp's) with the same issue.
So, there goes that theory.
What confuses me, is some ppl have this issue while other ppl have said they don't and some drive theirs hard everyday without this oil issue too.

Yeah, but compare the ratio of 6MT vs. 5AT with this problem. 20:1, if even that?

^^^Forgot to mention that there are other posts on this similiar subject and some have AT's in those other posts too. So, there's more than one 5AT G with this issue.
But yeah, probably more 6mt's than 5AT's in general. But that's only for 05-06's. 03-04 6mt's are non rev-up VQ's anyways.
Point was it's happening to non rev-up VQ's too.

Checked my oil after work. I had to put 2 quarts of oil in my engine. That's 3 quarts total on a brand new G before my first oil change.

Ouch!!
When's your oil change sheduled?
I'd let your Dealer know this ASAP.
Think I said this before...but I told my dealer at my last oil service with them and they noted it in their system as using every 1000mi.
Just waiting to it to drop a quart, then take to them a quart low for them to note mileage.
My worst so far has been 1200mi/quart. Yours sounds worse...
That really sux man...so sorry to hear this with your new baby.
