Took it in to south bay infiniti and they said they would do the OC test on it and to come back in after 1k miles. After a month I took it back in they told me I needed to replace my engine, they told me good thing I was under warranty and that I bought extended warranty. I was all happy to know I was getting it fix... They guy comes back out and tells me that their records doesn't show that the previous owner did any maintenance with them, so the warranty wouldn't cover since this could of happen from bad maintenance.

So I'm wondering if this happen to any else?

I am kinda disappointed since the car runs good and everything but the only thing is that I have to buy 3 extra qts of oil before every oil change...

oh yeah I also got in contact with infiniti help line and gave them my vin # and they told me they were going to search all the records of maintenance for this car, they called a week after saying that the only maintenance done to the car was the ones I did to it, including the one oil change I did at ez-lube...

HELP!!!
I'm in the same boat since I did my own changes since about 10,000mi. I currently will hit 55,000mi on this tank of gas. However, my car doesn't eat as much oil as yours (yet/knock on wood). Look on the bright side, at least now you can go with longer oil change intervals provided you check the oil regularly (j/k). I did an oil analysis using GC 0W-30 and everything checked out OK despite adding 2 quarts in 5,400mi of use. I'm good for intervals of 7,000mi between oil changes.

As I've said before you could try different dealers and see what they say. I believe it's do to engine design and it's hit or miss (usually miss). Is it worth having the car engine swapped for 3 lousy qts of oil per change? Maybe or maybe not. You can also try switching back to dino oil if you use synthetic to save money and perhaps use a thicker W weight and overall viscosity to see if that helps. I would recommend Penzoil yellow bottle, Castrol GTX or even Valvoline white bottle. Good luck. Please let us know what your results are.

This is a long shot but can you go back to the previous owner and speak with him or her as to where they got service done? Maybe they have some records you can use in your case, I don't know what stat your in but in NY you can trace back. I remember I built a 1971 Olds 442 for a friend and he sold it to a guy in Lynbrook and then that guy sold it to a Cop, I was at a show and told the Cop "I built this car" shocked would put it mildly how he took it. Then we began talking and he told me what I already knew about the owner trail, so good luck!

@VQdriver: Your right about the whole thing if its worth changing the engine for OC... I have no complaints about the car what so ever cuz to me the thing hauls @ss! it even chirps when I shift to 3rd gear... The only thing I'm worried about is if this is going to affect the engine on the long run.

@Infinitlyfast: That sounds like a good idea... Im in CA by the way, how do you trace back in NY? Maybe I can do the same here but this is the last time I give this a try.

Thanks for all your help.

Yeah, that's complete BS. They're just jerking you around to try to get out of the replacement. Print off the full TSB (look around here, it should be posted somewhere) and bring it in to them. Nowhere does it say you have to have maintenance records or prove anything. If you fail the OC they replace your engine, end of story.

If that doesn't work I know some people here have called Infiniti consumer protection and complained to corporate until they authorized it. You're definitely owed a replacement motor if you have the problem and are under warranty, don't let them deny you over BS.

I am not sure how it works in CA but I know you can get a cop to talk to and go from there.

@Golden, does your car eat oil? If so, were you able to bring it in for an OC test and successful engine swap with no previous records? Iirc, according to the TSB they should take your car in no questions asked, check level, top it off if necessary and return to owner for 1,000mi test. The dealer practice is a different story however. They must lose money over this that's why. Infiniti corporate must not have their back. It might help to print the entire tsb out and try to twist the service rep's arm. Imho it's a waste of time and aggravation. Just drive top it off and get an oil analysis every once in a while.

Yep, i'm on my first and hopefully only replacement. I was worried at first because I bought it used with no records and hadn't even saved the ones I had done outside of the dealership. But surprisingly my dealership didn't even ask about that. They did a complete oil change, started the test, I barely failed the 1st time, failed BAD the 2nd time, and I had the new engine a week later.

Print out the TSB and if they tell you that you need a full oil change record ask them where in the TSB it says that. (hint: it doesn't) If they follow the TSB then the only thing that matters is whether or not you fail the consumption test and are still under warranty. Everything else is just them fighting because they're lazy. They get reimbursed for parts and paid for labor so they don't even lose money on it.

And buzzking, that's probably the sound a lot of people hear before they realize their oil level is very low. Sometimes the belt tensioner chain (i think?) rattles when oil pressure is getting low, and your oil light won't flash until you have ZERO oil pressure, so that's garbage. If your G rattles when you start it up, check the oil level.

Zioxx,

Read the TSB.

Look at the flow chart. There is a provision for not having an oil change history. They just do a complete oil consumption test.

The dealer is definitely jerking you around.
