Everyone: Check Your Oil!
#1621
Hey guys I have a question to ask, and hopefully I can get a somewhat serious reply lol.
I am planning on buying my first g35 next week(03-046mt) but reading about this oil burning issue has me really worried. Is this a problem on a LOT of g's or should I just go ahead and buy one? I am pretty mechanically inclined, but I've never opened a motor up and replaced piston rings lol so that seems pretty tough.

hey everyone, newbie here. been reading some of these post about this oil burning problem, im currently saving up for an 07' g35 but now hearing this i'm wondering if i'd just be better off with an 08' g37 instead? or do the 37 have the same oil burning problem? thanks in advance for the advice.

All vq's ranging from 01-07 burn oil. Rev up in the g35 and G just burns a lot of oil. They fixed it with the 07 and half rev up available in the g35 sedan and from then on, none of the engines have that problem.
Just something you got to live with. Both our g's burn oil. Mine burn about 2 quarts every oil change, hers burn 1 quart every oil change.

Hello. New guy here from Joplin, MO. Lots of interesting reading on this
forum so far. Purchased a 2006 G35 sedan with about 60K miles on it
about 4 months ago. Haven't checked the oil much since getting it, but
after reading these posts I will.
Being as the car was on a used car lot, have no way of knowing if the
engine was ever replaced....is there any easy way to tell?
How long is the factory warranty on the power train? Doubt there is
any time left now.
I notice that a K & N air filter arrangement has been added....does this
help or present any particular problem?? Don't know what the original
plumbing looked like, but there is what appears to be an open hose near
the base.....is that a problem??
Any helpful info appreciated. Thanks. Bob

^ Hey Bob welcome.
Is your 06 sedan a 5AT or a 6MT?
Power-train warranty is 6yr/70Kmi whichever is first.
Any Nissan/Infiniti dealer can look up your VIN and see if there ever was an engine replacement done under warranty.
K&N air intake is ok, but open hose at base? Post a picture and lets see exactly what you mean. Could be a bad thing or a don't worry about it b/c it was part of the oem system no longer in use.

Thanks for the reply Skyline. I dont know which it is - how do I tell?
Never owned one of these before and know not much about them...but
am learning here on the forum. My wife bought the car because she
wanted something she considered "cute"......after her 01 P T Cruiser
was destroyed by the Joplin tornado in May.
I did notice some bluish-grey smoke from the exhaust on Friday when I
jammed on it a bit in some traffic on the interstate. Had never seen any
smoke before.
This morning I checked the oil.....it was about in the middle of the area
with the cross hatches on it.....so guessed it was maybe a quart low.
Have driven it since June and only checked the oil once before.
So I added a quart of Castrol 5W-20 to it. Haven't had time to recheck
it yet. That dipstick sure is an unhandy thing. When I went to remove
the oil filler cap, it was on so tight I couldn't get it off. I asked another
fellow if he could turn it - he did but it was tough and almost hurt his
hand. Tried to put it back on snugly but not extra tight.
So, am slowly learning about the car......real slowly.
Bob
Here's a pic of it......
The windows have all been tinted and has aftermarket wheels with some "high speed" tires. Too dark to go out and look
at size.......but what tire size should this car have? I think what's on there now are a bit small as the speedo is about
2 to 5 miles per hour slow.

^ 5AT = Auto Tranny. 6MT = 6 speed standard. 6MT's your year G will have the revup VQ that has a TSB about oil consumption and a big thread on here about that TSB.
Middle of cross hatch = half quart low. Yup dip stick design is retarded. I wouldn't run a multi 20 weight, too thin imo. Use at minimum, a multi 30. Blue smoke is oil burning.
Lots, umm...TONS of info here on Driver. Search is a good feature. All your questions will be answered in those appropriate thread subjects and sections.

It has an automatic trans.
I don't much like those "high speed" tires....they are noisy, but the
dealer said he had recently put them on new, so am stuck with them
for the while. Will check with a tire store when they need replaced to
see what other tire I can use. I bet these tires are not very good on
snow and ice. We live in southwest Missouri, so that sometimes
occurs in the winter.
Appreciate the helpful info.

Looks like you have 18" wheels on your car. The "high speed" (Z rated?) tires are a safety aspect of a car that can run 140mph+. If you have the "sport" version, you will get some road noise no matter what tires you run as the bushings are a bit stiff to take some compliance out of the suspension and make is "stiff" for better handling.
