Wrathernaut's Double-Din Installation FAQ, Shopping and Resource List
#1126
So figured I'd get some input on what I should do for my double din install. I have taken my G to almost a dozen so called car audio specialists who have either told me that having my factory nav work after my install wont work or they tell me it will work but is is going to cost upwards of 1500.00 to install with the crappy metra kit. I know a lot of members have been doing the install themselves but I just dont feel comfortable enough to do it and then it come out out crappy and me be mad at myself. Another reason I WANT to do it myself is because no shop will warranty the work if I purchase the JDM kit and have them use that one instead of the metra which I kinda understand but I mean really whats there to break on the kit rather then them mess up on the wiring and if there isnt a warranty whats the point in me paying them to do it? This whole experiance has been painful to say the least and I just really want a good clean double din setup for my G.
If it's a headunit with navigation, plus an amp, speakers, and sub, that's not bad.
If it's a basic headunit install and nothing else, that's terrible.
There's clear videos of both 03-04 and 05-07 radio removal. So long as you're not a total klutz and follow directions (like disconnecting battery and wiring according to the guide) it's quite easy to do.

Just completed an install of a Pioneer AVIC-X940BT with the ASWC in my '06 G35 Coupe...wanted to give a big THANK YOU ! to Wrathernaut and all the other contributors in this thread - with your diagrams, pictures, and videos, it was a relatively easy task and everything worked perfectly on my initial power-up. I built a soldered and wire-tied integrated wiring harness, including salvaging a SWC connector from the dead stock radio (great idea, thx!), and that made installing all of the harnesses much easier without cutting into any of the stock wiring.
All up, I added significant capability (nav, iPod support, BT hands-free, and XM/Sirius) for only about $300 over what it would have cost to have the factory audio finisher repaired (and mine was already replaced once before)...for anyone contemplating whether to go DD or fix the stock stuff, go DD!
FYI, Crutchfield has the X940BT on sale now for $549 (after $150 rebate), with free cable harness kit and antenna adapter, and the Metra JDM panel for $99 (yes, it sucks, but I saved $200+ for now) with free shipping and no tax...and the ASWC was on sale last week at Amazon for $45 shipped.
Thanks again!

I am swapping my Eclipse DD in my G for a Kenwood DD I have in my Jetta. I bought a Jetta thinking I was going to sell my G because it was more economical but I just don't like it compared to my G even though its 5 years newer. I will just have to spend a little more on tires and gas for the 1800 miles I drive on average a month for work. A lot more fun to drive though!
Will the wire harness be the same or different?

I had the shop install my 8400 and everything is working fine with the exception of the GPS voice command. I was wondering if it's a wiring issue do I need to buy anything extra? or is it a settings issue? The GPS works fine but the voice command doesn't work since the double-din conversion.

Depends on your iPhone and version of iOS, Motion-X Drive and INRIX traffic are the only ones listed, and you'll need a few more cables depending on your iPhone version too.
I'd say just use your smartphone separately from the radio to avoid incompatibility issues and whatever FREE guidance you want to use.

So I am having some problems with my new install. I have a 05 g35 with Bose. I purchased a Jensen VM9225BT unit and a PAC ROEM NIS2 (no steering wheel hookup).
I followed the wiring diagram on the first page and hooked it up. The unit powers on but no sound. I hooked up the original to verify the speakers still worked and they did.
Not sure why the new HU doesnt produce sound (radio, cd or iphone)??
Any help appreciated!!!
