Diy: Sticky For Window Motor Repairs/door Panel Removal
My drivers window started to act up the other day. It has always gotten stuck all the way up or down but if I opened and closed the door it would work again. It goes down completely smoothly But now if I use the auto-up function is goes up really slow, almost like there is something that is holding it back, and once it's up all the way, it goes down halfway. I can then close it without using the auto function, but then it makes a grinding noise.
I took the door panel off and did the reset procedure and it did nothing. Going to do the cleaning procedure tomorrow. Anyone else had this problem with the window basically struggling to rise and making noise?

Thanks for the write-up it was a huge help!
I purchased the motor from Autozone but it is louder than the original one in my drivers side door, more of a mechanical noise. Is that normal?
Cleaning the motor worked for me, but now a month later it is dying again.
One thing I noticed, when it first started acting up, if the window was in any position but all the way up and I went over a bump, there would be a metal on metal or metal on glass knock. After I cleaned it and put everything back together, it wasn't there. It's acting up again after a month, and that same noise is back when I go over a bump. Is there anything that could be coming loose/getting knocked out of position that could cause the window getting stuck?
I just find it odd that the sound went away after the cleaning but came back when the window started getting stuck again.

Awesome DIY! I am not one to work on his own car, but I decided I would try to tackle this task. Well... I was forced into doing this DIY "solo" at 1am on monday morning hours before I had to be at work... My windows have both been acting up for a good 4 months & I just try to ignore rolling them down, so I don't have to deal with the hassle of it messing up. The driver side window went down late sunday night and I was in a panic when it would not go back up after 25 plus knocks on the door. I followed all your steps in hope that cleaning the inside of the motor would solve the issue.... Well IT DID! but i know it won't be a fix for life. I am going to buy new motors for both sides from autozone next week and have a dealership install them for.
Heres a few iphone shots:

I started this task at 1am finished at 4am and was at work on-time at 9am.....

G35man04,
Thank you very much for this detailed DIY.
My passenger window rolled down yesterday and stayed there. When I pressed the button, I could hear the motor going and making weird "rubbing" noises.
Well long story short your write up and pictures greatly helped to take everything apart quickly.
It turns out I found out why the 3 screws that connect motor and regulator (the coil thing where all the wires that ultimately move the window) are tightened so hard... To prevent them from getting loose and come off.
I lost two of them, consequently the motor's torque was not transfered properly and the regulator did not turn. I found the skrews in the door, so its not that somebody just forgot to put them on, they came loose. I also noticed that the screws that connect the window to the "rails" of the auto window mechanics were loose too.
So my suggestion would be once you are taking this appart replace the screws connecting motor and regulator with longer bolts, ideally with a phillips and wrench head and tighten them with a nut, so it won't come off again.
Apart from that, everything was as described and not really difficult.
The most tricky part is reassembling the alluminum plate with the mechanics. I found it easiest to first attach the motor and then the two lower boltes with the nuts and washer, but let them loose so you can align the upper part of the rails. It is indeed helpfull to have the window half up or so to be able to yank it around for allignment.
Great job, and doable for every one who can handle a wrench and a screw driver.
Best,
Red

I just got finished doing the window motor repair with some stand up R/C car motor brushes that i bought online. My window motor now works like its brand new!
One thing that i would suggest to anyone that is going to tackle this is to make sure that you break in the new window motor brushes before installing the motor back into your G. If you don't break in the motor brushes, the window motor may be alot louder because the new brushes will not seat correctly without being broken in.

Thanks for the amazing DIY. I'll be doing this project this weekend and hopefully it saves me alot of cash.
The window only goes up if I hold the up button while slamming the door shut haha. It then fights me and tries to go back down unless the I hold the up button for a while. It spazzes out for a sec and then sets in place. Hopefully a cleaning should fix it for now.
Crazy that so many people have this problem....

Big thanks to g35man04!!! My window has been getting stuck so I was just going to buy a new motor but chose to do your DIY first and try cleaning the motor!! It was so nasty that the bushings were not making any contact at all!! My window now works like new!!
Glad I could help!
Last month I got a replacement motor and it has already stopped working. The difference is, it didn't progressively stop working like my original, it was working perfectly fine yesterday but today it got stuck down. Is there anything else that commonly causes the window to stop working? I find it hard to believe that the replacement window motor would last a month.

That's where I bought it from. I'm going to get a new one later today but I don't want to keep changing it every month or two. Hopefully this next one will last longer.
Good news the new motor worked. I noticed on the new one that the rubber tube/chimney/exhaust looking thing was pointed up where it was pointed down toward the wires on the old one. I wonder if that had anything to do with it.
I wish a company would come out with one that fixes whatever design flaw causes these to be terrible. I would pay $250-300 if I KNEW i would never have to replace it.

Did you ever find the solution for this. Your the only other person with the same issue I've found with tons of searching. I'm having the exact same issue. Drivers side works fine all the time. Passanger side only works with door open. The whole switch loses power when the door is fully closed but opened its fine. Happened right after I replaced my motor.
Did you guys reset the window motor with the door close or open? We have to reset the motor with the door CLOSED because we have automatic window and it won't close all the way when it opens. It has a small gap when it opens and the window will automatic roll up when we close the door. This gave me a headache when i reset it with the door open...
