It's the inner bushing that is replaced, if your outer connection is damaged then you will need a whole new rod.

I find that when I'm on the highway in the far left or right lane, where the crown of the road pulls the car to one side a little: if I take my hands off the wheel, I feel a rapid clunking from the front end, almost as rapid as a wheel out of balance. But the moment I apply any steering compensation, it's gone. When I go over bumps, I hold on for dear life.

Can this be attributed to a bad Compression Rod?

I'm going to try that next time I'm on the highway. It's tough to tell because my wheels are out of balance as well.

i have the exact same problem,

when i am driving at around 30-40 mph i hear it but it goes away if i adjust the steering, and the clunking gets super louder if i slightly apply the brakes while the car is in angle. accelerating doesnt cause the noise though. im pretty sure this is the compression rods. feels like my tires are about to fall off. i also here a clunk once when i press the brakes. sounds like a clap of some sort.

After I started this thread a little less than 2 years ago..... it's nice to see that it's still alive and well! Here is an update on the compression rods on my 04 Coupe with 32K: Still intermitently creaking. I have taken out an Infiniti Elite extended warranty for an additional 4 years or 46,000 miles and will wait until it gets intolerable. My girlfriend's 06 G35 sedan with 30K has it's fair share of creaking going over bumps as well. Has anyone established an exact updated compression rod or bushing that replaces the original one effectively? (Sorry, I did not read every post). Thanks all.

Well my front left is creaking. Now that nice weather is here i finally started rolling down the windows and hear it.

I am in warranty, but is the new rod a permanent solution to the prob?

Are you referring to part 15? Is that what you replaced?

You're talking about the white plastic that covers the first like three coils, that looks like it can't cost more than $.99?? THAT eliminated your noise??

When did you hear the noise? Under what conditions?
