Could y'all give a STG2 newbie some advise on the belts *BEFORE* I have the blower installed!!! Please!!, I would HATE to have issues with squeaky, torn, ripping belts!

How hard is it to replace yourself?

Could you find a 'tougher' belt?

Sorry for yet another question guys!

Thanks!

In the 4 years i had the kit i really didnt have much problem with the belts....they were the only problem. What i mean is the little 4 rib belt will have to be tightend once in a while and replaced every 6-10,000 miles which is no big deal. The belt for the p/s-alternator i had to adjust a couple times but all in all my kit was dead reliable.
I would investigate their new 6 rib belt as the replacement for the 4 rib belt and no the belts are not hard to replace.

Okay, here's a little more info before my next meeting :)

[QUOTE=WhiteonWheat]^ Best "overall" information I've received to date bro - Can't thank you enough!

More Question(s):

1.) I have received a quote from Z1 Motorsports in Georgia ($800) - Is that bad?

I CAN'T REMEMBER THE QUOTES I GOT. MY FRIENDS AND I DID THE INSTALL; BUT MY FRIENDS ARE ADVANCED MECHANICS & HOBBYISTS. $800 SOUNDS LIKE IT WAS THE PRICE OF THE STAGE 4 KIT. NO LABOR YET...

2.) Should I invest in upgrading (purchasing parts from STILLEN) to a STG4 *BEFORE* having someone install? - I personally think this would be most logical, right?

YES AND NO. ITS ALWAYS NICE TO BREAK THINGS DOWN AND PAY LESS LATER ON OUR BUDGET WHEN WE GET IT INSTALLED. BUT FROM MY EXPERIENCE, AND UNLESS YOU KNOW YOUR SHOP REALLY WELL AND YOU'RE NOT SITTING ON PARTS TOO LONG... IF BY BAD LUCK YOU GET A DEFECTIVE PART OR BAD INSTALL, THE SHOP INSTALLING WILL BLAME YOUR PARTS, STILLEN WILL QUESTION HOW LONG YOU HAVE BEEN SITTING ON PARTS...

SO I WOULD USUALLY JUST ORDER PARTS AND HAVE THEM INSTALLED ASAP OR SHIP DIRECTLY TO SHOP OR JUST HAVE SHOP ORDER BUT COMPARE PRICES SO THAT SHOP DOESN'T ADD ON A "TAX" TO THE TOTAL PRICE. HOPE THAT HELPS... JUST MY OPINION FROM EXPERIENCE.

3.) What kind of MPG drop can I expect from a STG4 with the added 7th injector etc etc?

YOU KNOW WHEN I FIRST GOT IT I DOGGED ON THE GAS SO MUCH... B/C IT WAS SO MUCH FUN... I THINK I GOT AS LOW AS 12 -14 MPG. HOWEVER, I TOOK A DRIVE TO VEGAS AND WAS PASSING LOTS ON THE TWO LANE HIGHWAY IN THE DESERT UNDER FULL BOOST OFTEN AND STILL MANAGED TO AVERAGE 21.4 MPG. I WAS PRETTY HAPPY TO BREAK 20 MPG... SO I THINK AS LONG AS YOU'RE NOT IN BOOST ALL THE TIME, YOU GAS MILEAGE IS MINIMALLY AFFECTED.

I AVERAGE AROUND 18 MPG AS A DAILY DRIVER PICKING UP MY SON FROM SCHOOL AND DRIVING TO WORK, FWY, IN TOWN, AND SOME TRAFFIC.

4.) When I called and talked to STILLEN AND a member here that has STG4, they both said that I should NOT upgrade my HEADERS/CATS etc etc, that the STILLEN SC kits work best with the OEM setup. They did BOTH say that a cat-back exhaust is fine and will help, so I went with the STILLEN true-dual exhaust and already have it on and LOOOOVVVVEEEE it! So my question is: Why not upgrade the Headers/Cats etc etc. Does it KILL THE BACKPRESSURE too much? What's the deal? I thought it would give MORE power not less?

YES, THIS IS CORRECT. CAT BACK EXHAUST IS GOOD. A ROOTS TYPE SUPERCHARGER BUILDS BOOST IN THE MOTOR. ITS KIND OF BACK *** WARD... BUT IF YOU LET OUT TOO MUCH FLOW (I.E. HEADERS) YOU'D ACTUALLY LOSE A PSI OF BOOST. THEREFORE, FOR EXAMPLE, STILLEN WOULD KEEP A STAGE 3 WITH HEADERS UNDER WARRANTY BECAUSE INSTEAD OF MAKING 7 PSI (STAGE 3) WITH HEADERS YOU WOULD ONLY MAKE 6 PSI (LIKE A STAGE 2).

I HAVE ALWAYS WANDERED WHICH IS MORE... THE HP GAIN YOU GET FROM HEADERS OR THE EXTRA PSI OF HEAT AND PRESSURE YOU GET FROM BOOST WITHOUT IT. I THINK THE BOOST PSI WOULD BE BETTER FOR LOW END TORQUE, WHILE THE HEADERS WILL FREE THINGS UP TOP AND ALLOW CAR TO RUN COOLER... NEVER TESTED WHICH WOULD BE BETTER... A DYNO AND WILLINGNESS TO PUT HEADERS ON WITH INTENT TO PULL OFF IF NOT HAPPY WITH NUMBERS WOULD BE ALL IT WOULD TAKE!

DO IT... I WANT TO KNOW TOO

5.) What fuel should I put in the coupe once the SC kit is installed? With STG2 say keep with 93 Octane? What about if I go up to STG4?

THE BEST FUEL YOU CAN FIND. I DON'T HEAR ANY PINGING WITH 91 OCTANE. OCCASIONALLY A LIGHT TAP DOWN LOW BEFORE THE INJECTOR STARTS SHOOTING IN WHEN ENGINE IS COLD ON A COLD TEMP NIGHT. SO I USUALLY JUST WARM UP CAR BEFORE ANY REAL BOOSTING HAPPENS. WHEN I DRIVE A TRACK OR UP IN THE MOUNTAINS OR ANY KIND OF AGGRESSIVE DRIVING... SAY THE DRIVE TO VEGAS... I WOULD ADD A BLACK BOTTLE OF 108 OCTANE JUST TO BE SAFE. BUT MY DAILY DRIVES, I AM FINE WITH 91... SO YOUR CAR SHOULD BE HAPPY WITH 93.

6.) Would a fuel injector kit improve performance any or hurt?
http://www.intensepower.com/poenvq35in38.html

SORRY NO TIME TO LOOK UP YOUR LINK...

7.) What about new CAMS - HURT OR HELP?
http://www.intensepower.com/sojwtca35.html

AGAIN DIDN'T LOOK AT YOUR LINK, BUT GENERALLY SPEAKING A GOOD SOLID SET OF DYNO PROVEN CAMS BY A REPUTABLE MFG... WITH ALWAYS GIVE YOU GAINS. I DON'T SEE WHY CAMS AND SUPERCHARGER WOULD NOT BE BENEFICIAL AS IF IT WAS CAMS AND TURBOCHARGER/CENTRIFUGAL SC.

IF SOMEONE KNOWS MORE, CHIME IN PLEASE.

SORRY for all the questions - just looking to get the MOST out of the VQ with the STILLEN setup is all.

DON'T BE SORRY... THAT'S WHAT WE'RE ALL HERE FOR RIGHT? HELPING EACH OTHER LEARN MORE. BOTTOM LINE IS STAGE 4 IS WORTH IT. IT JUST MAKES YOUR WANT MORE

I would investigate their new 6 rib belt as the replacement for the 4 rib belt and no the belts are not hard to replace.

Belts are easy to replace with minimal technical skill. I usually keep a spare belt and a couple of wrenches and I can change the belt in about 5 mins with the engine cooking hot on the side of the road (with gloves on).

I agree with Superchargedg, investigate and just install the 6 rib from day one. I think Stillen is only installing units now with 6 rib; they are trying to phase out the 4 rib units. The 6 rib I was told by Stillen to last at least 15-20K + miles....

stillen

Whats up guys! i havent had a chance to dyno my 03 6mt sedan stillen stg 2 with act/flywheel combo. But i will dyno soon. Im curious, has anybody had an air=fuel problem with the stillen kit? Same thing with cylinder compression? Ima speak out of topic but ive noticed a little bit of oil inside my throttle body. Does anybody have this same problem? I dont know if its due to the superchager! If anybody has an idea please let me know.

+1

I paid less than that for mine but it was 2nd hand. Well worth it.

Install is not hard if you have some basic skills. I put mine on one evening.

I had a little bit of detonation with my stage 4 at high rpm and high temp (Phoenix summer). The split second box did not pull timing when there was detonation which was one thing I didn't like about the kit. The stock ECU was not set-up to pull enough for my situation.

Can you post your dyno? Just wanted to see if you may have a slipping clutch or some other weird anomoly? Also, did you have a boost gauge hooked to the system to see how many pounds your motor actually saw during the run?

I was thinking about putting in a stillen Stage 1 S/C and just adding in the intercooler later.
anyone have any suggestions for intercoolers, other than the stillen.
also how much was installation/tuning for your S/C's?

I bought mine used and installed the kit myself. the only thing that you have to buy from Stillen is the heat exchanger under the supercharger. the front inter cooler and the water pump you can find online. I do have an extra new heat exchanger if you're interested.

Hey, thanks for the offer but i don't have the kit yet, i was just pricing one out, to find the best S/C for my money. How much do you think i can get the IC, heat exchanger and water pump for online? and would you recommend getting the 36,000 mile warranty?

I've got a 300ZX also. i drive that daily, just single turbo shiro though.
