I switched back to the 3.3 rear end and a quaife - had a 3.5 and ATS carbon before. Maybe a little slower in 4th gear, but the other gears are all more usable on street tires. I have DSS pro axles but that was just a precaution - still have my perfectly good stock axles sitting in a corner of the garage.

Eh gord. All the new stuff coming is in my vehicle description- most of the parts you listed are there. I remembered what you said about eagle rods from before but we decided to go for the Brian crower rods I think. I think we went with just about everything else you said. A new rad is also on the books- a mizu. Boost controller is going in too, though no additional oil cooler yet.

They have the engine accessories off and I think the plan is to crack it on Tuesday Wednesday. The hanging question is the crank and whether or not it's damaged. I'm really curious to see what happened!

On another note one of their drift racers recently did really, really well in his opening race so I think that's awesome for the shop. Congrats to Walker Wilkerson in his formula drift performance! 7th out of 50 and 16th overall (might be a bit off with that-) I think is pretty impressive- especially after seeing that drift video posted over in the Canada forum.

Anyway won't know much until tuesday-Wednesday.

I think the BC rods might be considered better than Eagle, they are also more expensive I have Pauter rods myself but I know the eagles are very popular due to good bang for the buck that is why I mentioned them.

I will go have a look at your parts list, nice to know about the axles and rear diff as well just for my own curiosity.

I just looked, nice list even Cosworth pistons some very good parts. I would talk to the shop about a damperd crank pulley it is a little insurance if you spend a small fortune on an engine build no point risking vibrations causing premature crank or bearing wear/damage? Also while every thing is apart it might be worth considering getting get the hot side of the turbos, down pipes and turbo manifolds ceramic coated to help keep under hood temps down. Got any more more you need help spending

"On a side note we're tearing into your motor, and I believe we found the source of all our troubles. With your kit it uses an oil pan spacer, and you have to put a spacer on the oil pick up tube as well. This needs to be completely airtight with a gasket on each side to ensure that it sucks only oil. On your motor when they put the spacer in the pick up tube they only used sealant on one side, and there was nothing sealing it on the top side. You can clearly see in the pictures the clean surface where there was no gasket. If the oil pick up didn't have good suction and wasn't sucking enough oil it would be fine for daily putt-putt driving but when you hit boost and it needed extra oil for the turbos it wouldn't get enough, leading to oil starvation. Consistent with this the rod on cylinder #6 was bent pretty bad, so far the block looks good, we're still disassembling to check the crank."

As an additional note in car language:

"Ceramic coating is good idea, we have a place locally that does it... Its a great idea, both the manifolds and the downpipe, but the first place to invest extra money would be replacing and cleaning up the oil/coolant lines. Especially with the rubber lines it has now, over time they'll degrade and weap oil, AN fittings and some good lines would be the first place I'd throw some money."

So I guess we're getting down to the nitty gritty now. I suspect the new lines and fittings are a no brainer at this point for longevity of the build... and I think I'll put in to get that coating done. Thanks for the tip Gord!

Here are some pics of the issue for those of you who might know what you're looking at:

My pick up has zero gaskets zero sealant on either side, bent rods are not caused by by oil starvation spun bearings are....

Yeah- but you're a put put driver, aren't you? Yours would be fine.

JWT does call for RTV sealant on both sides of the pick up spacer. Seems unlikely but I suppose it's possible...

Now you have me paranoid, I don't recall if I put any sealant on or not. But it ran for a full season with out any if I didn't put it on. I will have to be sure to do it when I put my 3.8L back in.

I still think oil starvation would spin a bearing not bend a rod.

Agree, and I still think the timing was all fubard up and is the cause of the bent rod.

Hope the rest of the build goes smooth.

Eh guys... I'm hoping the rest goes smooth as well. I think they're getting it to the shop yesterday or today for machining the cylinders and once that's done I hope the bad news is over. It's about time to start getting some good news about progress instead of news about tearing down the engine looking for what fell apart.

All of the tear apart costs should be complete- now it's a build again!

Okay... so perhaps I was a bit hasty on the rebuild claim. Sounds like the shop doing the machining on the block is packed from the start of race season. It's going to be about 2 weeks to complete the process- This isn't really a big deal as it's a 3 week turn around for the transmission including the shipping.

A couple of things that are in the works... polished timing covers and plenum will get done at some point in here. I know the TCC are a PITA to access unless of a situation just like this so might as well get it polished. They have a local guy in Kent who, judging by the photos I've seen, does work that is just about, if not as good as SxExCx (Sean)'s work. There's minimum turn around on that so it'll just get done when it gets done. It'll help add a little "wow" factor when the hood goes up.

Sounds like the ceramic coating is a go as well as some upgraded oil / coolant lines to the turbos...

Going to take a BIT longer than I was hoping but that's one thing I have on my side right now. I have a 3 week stint at work coming up anyway... Hopefully we'll be buttoning it up before I head back to the coast!
