OC test completed. 5 qts gone in 1200 miles for the second time. Engine being ordered. Drove away in a loaner.

You have to specify. My dealer measured how much was gone then measured against that at the time I brought it back in for another eval. Technically it's not per TSB protocol so you can argue that as well. Did they top it off when they started the OC test? Whichever way you chose you have to be firm. They're experts in manipulation lol.Originally Posted by 05350GT6MT
i just went in to get my oil checked at 2000 miles and they said i was down 7mm, but when i checked my oil a few days ago i was about half way down the dip stick. these guys are full of $h!t !!!
7mm doesn't sound bad at all. It's better to keep your nicely running car as is than risk a botched up engine swap or another defective motor. This IMO...

the first time they said it was down 6mm, so i was like "ok". then they topped it off back to the H and told me to come back in 1000 miles. so 1000 miles later i checked the oil myself before bringing my car to them and it was about half way down the stick. yet they said it was only 7mm. i thought it should've been at ATLEAST 10mm...

I was amazed how fast it was burning oil. I was ready for fight since I do most of my oil changes. I had samples of the past oil changes that the dealer had done,my folders of nearly every receipt associated with car since I got it new. They didnt ask to see them. The car gets babied just hit 62k in almost 5 year. My first major issue with the car I felt like the dealer did what they should have based upon the facts. I'll be more likely to refer folks there and buy another Infiniti.Originally Posted by VQdriver

You should have them measure it infront of you. Dont take their word for it.Originally Posted by 05350GT6MT

Been in the market for a car and the G35 coupe is really the only one I've liked. Was looking for a low mileage 2003-2006 but after reading this thread I'm not so sure. Does the VQ35HR in the 2007+ coupe NOT have this OC issue? I actually like the body on the 2003-2006 a bit better but I have no desire to deal with this.

^No VQ35HR's in 2007 G35 coupes.
I'm not aware of any TSB concerning the VQ35HR with oil consumption however, I haven't researched much on that powerplant. At-any-rate, those are found in the redesigned 2007+ G35 Sedans from first gen Sedans and 2007+ 350Z's. Dual air intakes are the dead give-away with those when you pop the hood. 350Z's with HR's have a bubbled hood from previous years as another give-away.
Depending on VIN, some VQ37VHR's (G37's and 370Z's) have this OC issue with their own separate TSB as well.
G/L what ever you decide and welcome to Driver.

IMHO Folks, it boils down to the increasingly popular Direct Injection design on many powerplants of today (including a few years back) with the strict emission/mpg requirements that must be met. Some got it right, 'many' didn't and still haven't, especially as the engine ages from early DI designs. Piston, ring pack, valve guide and PCV designs play a big part as well as injector placement in the cc's. Then throw in the fuels and oils of today (though they're finally formulating better oils like SN/ILSAC GF-5 to help with DI powerplant issues somewhat). Separate threads on all that, so I'll stop there.
Nissan/Infiniti is not the only ones with this OC issue, though they failed big time from the get-go for other reasons on these revup 298 hp VQ's or soon afterward, hence this TSB thread. Same with their 2006 2.5L powerplants that the NHTSA mandated a recall on a couple Nissan models (can't remember those at the moment). Those owners got automatic powerplant extended warranties free btw...WTH!! We've been kicked to the curb regarding that. Thanks Infiniti!!
Troll/research Audi/VW's for another example about OC. I have a 2008 2.0T FSI powerplant with terrible OC now at 50K which I noticed starting at 30K miles, being original owner, ultra **** on servicing regiments, 50% sooner on factory OCI intervals with Audi/VW approved 502.00 oil, etc. I've read terrible OC at 25-30K on those, so I feel lucky?
it lasting until 50K mi before that unit went South. Apparently their newer re-designed TSI units are much better, at the expense of FSI owners stuck with those POS failures. Their OC TSB is retarded and designed to screw the customer good if you don't obtain/read it before the Dealer starts OC testing. It's amazing.
Nissan/Infiniti are powder-puffs compared to Audi/VW when it comes to powerplant warranty issues btw. A new battle with VW for me now...oh now isn't that special
Quick update on my re-manned factory longblock replacement done back in 2008:
With a lot of continious proprietary spoon feeding, it's still running strong and OC is a steady 0.75 - 1.0 quart per 5K mile OCI's. It is what it is, I live with it and enjoy my G for what I originally bought it for...
Nissan/Infiniti/Audi/VW is NOT on my list for my next vehicle of future.
G/L everyone.

The VQ is DI? I thought it was multiport injection?
I want to stay away from DI for the time being. I've seen some pics of valve seats being totally gunked up on low mileage vehicles because oil vapors from the crankcase that travel through the PCV deposit on the valves and collect garbage because there is no gasoline spraying over them to keep them clean. The problem is actually made worse by low oil change intervals since the lightest components in the oil boil off at the highest rate with fresh oil. The pics I seen were of a Porsche Cayenne and one other, think it was a Japanese make.

^ I stand corrected. I was thinking of the VQ25DD and VQ30DD. Got this VW 2.0T issue on my brain mostly these days. My bad....

I just got back from the Nissan dealer (I didn't want to drive it an hour to Orlando with how fast it was burning oil), and was told that this was my issue and that they were going to have to rebuild/replace the engine to fix it...Infiniti and Nissan dealers have done all the oil changes and all of the service has been done at infiniti (they showed me the full maintenance record when I bought the car). Did Infiniti pay for anyone's repairs for this issue or am I screwed to be financing this myself?

If you're under warranty and TSB, should cost you $0. My cost = $0 except fuel to/from and the inconvenience of the process (time and Dealer games in qualifying).Originally Posted by DrTwoBrains

I am looking at a car on a Nissan dealership lot. The VIN is JNKCV54EX5M407937, it is a G35 m6 coupe, so i believe it falls under this TSB. However, the car has never been checked for this issue. It has 54k on it but is a few months out of warranty.
1. Is the car safe to buy?
2. Can the Nissan dealership sell this as "inspected" etc, without even checking the car for this issue (they owned it while the warranty was still in tact)?
3. I checked all service records with inifiniti and nissan, the car has never been checked for this issue.
